How to get a higher google ranking

A few people have asked me what they need to do to get a higher ranking in Google, so i thought i would write this article.

Everyone knows that google is the biggest and most used search engine on the internet, so being high in googles rankings is important. So what do you need to do?

1. First thing i recommend is to submit your website to The Open Directory. The open directory is the biggest human edited directory on the internet. Why is the Open Directory so important? The Open Directory is the crawl starting point for most of the biggest search engines (google, yahoo, AOL, Netscape to name a few) They crawl all the sites listed in the directory and then go from there to crawl all the other sites on the web. Even google recommends on their website that you submit to open directory before you submit to google. So this should be your starting point.
2. Content! Google loves fresh content! And lots of it! You should be aiming to add new content to your website every other day, if not more often. This is not just for the search engines, its for your visitors too. If they see your website is updated regularly they are more likely to keep visiting your site.
3. Backlinks. What is a back link? A backlink is basically a link that points to your website from other website. Why are they so important? Backlinks are important because this is how google reads how popular your website is. If it sees that hundreds of relevant websites are linking back to you, then it assumes your website has good content and has alot of visitors and it will put your website to the top of its listing’s. How do you get backlinks? Submit your website to as many directories as you can. Make sure you submit them to the correct area of the directories(google doesn’t like backlinks that are not relatevnt). You can also contact relevant websites and ask them kindly if they will add a link to their website. You can also add your link to your signature in forums.
